Bye, Bye, Sugar

We were watching "Top Chef" last week and one of the guys made a cucumber mojito.  Y'all know that I am not a drinker at all but I was washing dishes one night and suddenly a cucumber mojito sounded really appealing to me.  I've had a grand total of two 'regular' mojitos in my life, both when we were in Puerto Rico a couple of years ago, so Rich  had a little bit of a puzzled look on his face when I turned from the sink and said, "hey, you know what sounds good?"   We must have been pretty bored that night because we made a special trip to the grocery store and the liquor store to get the ingredients.   Here you see his extra special cucumber/fresh ginger mojito, which was crisp and clean and very tasty.

Rich has been taking photos of some of the desserts they've been making at the hotel.  These are from Wednesday night's Seafood Buffet.    Here we have a lemon-blueberry meringue shot, a layered pistachio-lime custard and coconut tapioca mini parfait, and a macaroon crust tart with banana brulee.

Cheesecake, caramel, chocolate mousse verrines.

A mouth-watering enticement.

Man, I love this stuff.   Since joining the Unalaska Biggest Winner Challenge,  I have to admit that I have not yet tried all that hard to get myself motivated.  I was checking the local blogs tonight and read with some dismay that Melanie and Alena are doing without sugar of any kind for 30 days.   Oh. my. gosh.   Sugar, especially white sugar, is oh-so-unhealthy for us, I know.   Sometimes I don't really care if I have it; I drink my iced tea "straight up" with just lemon; Rich and I have gone for months without eating many sweets at all.  But lately I seem to be back on a dessert kick--I blame it on vacation (which ended a month ago).  So, okay, gals, I accept the challenge you have thrown down.   There's that little devil sitting on my shoulder whispering "there's no way you can maintain for 30 days," so we'll see who wins this battle of the wills. Wish me luck.

The first day was awful, my name IS cookie dough...after that it's been fun, pineapple is so sweet, 100% wheat bread is delicious lol...I'm not eating as low-cal as Alena, but going with whole foods that are loaded with fiber and nutrients.

heh, low cal...last night my calorie total was 1857! But, I had an 11 hour night shelter shift after working all day so I was still snacking at 10:30pm. I'm glad to see another sugar-free participant. I'm finding things sweet that have never seemed sweet to me before, like milk and crackers. I am however still sneaking splenda into my coffee...

Jane, those pictures are evil...evil, I say!!!!!

On a sad note...my girl, Karla, didn't win the title of "Top Chef" last night. I'll still follow her career because I LOVE her cooking style!

Regarding sugar and other unhealthy things...I'm a diabetic and a heart patient...I find it much easier to eat low sugar than it is to eat low salt. However, you do get used to it and then it's amazing how you discover that you can really taste the flavors of food. Much processed food uses sugar and salt to cover up their lack of spices or other flavors.

Diva, I LOVE Karla, too. I cannot believe she let Casey influence her and get her off her own style. VERY disappointing!! I'm just glad that egomaniac Stefan didn't win, though I certainly would not say that Hosea was the strongest chef!!

Yeah, we have cut out sugar before and it was fine after the initial few days...I can't believe how easy it is to get sucked back into it, though. We do love desserts, darn it. I'm not too much of a salt freak so that's not a big issue for me. I just love carbs, unfortunately. BREAD could be a dessert in my book. We don't eat too many processed foods, with Rich being a chef and good at making everything from scratch. Yummy.

We are having fun with the Unalaska Biggest Winner Challenge...have you checked out that blog?

I could probably do without sugar for 30 days okay - I don't have much of a sweet tooth, it is more of a cheese tooth. I am ashamed to admit I have eaten a 16 ounce package of mozzarella like an apple on the way home from the grocery store . . . . ask Joe about my "Cheese-Ts" withdrawal move I do at work!

Okay, you Unalaskans are getting entirely too serious about this healthy thing. LOL Seriously, I can see why the solidarity in your community helps you all to stay committed. Isolation has always been the downfall of behavior change.

A recent article in a med. journal that also made it into the newspapers said that sugar is as addictive as heroin. Well, duh- who didn't know that? :) It (sugar) actually begins to destroy your cells from the inside out. Yuck. I gave it up awhile back, but then someone brought chocolate brownies to work, and I'm sad to say, I couldn't resist. SO, I'm working on it again. My name is Kathi, and I am an addict...
